CORVAIR HEAD REBUILD

This is a new service available to you as a Corvair enthusiast.  The following work can be customized for each customer's needs.

Head Cleanup and
Inspection:

After receiving your heads they are cleaned and inspected to see what repair work is necessary.  Some heads are unusable due to corrosion or heat damage.  If rebuildable, a list is made of all the work required.  Valves are removed, seats checked, and cylinder mating surface is inspected.   Once the core is passable it goes to the milling machine for touchup....

Milling process:

On the milling machine there are a couple things I can do.
1) Mill the tops of the fins and clean up some of the flashing and uneven surfaces for better cooling
2) Mill the valve cover surface even - not always needed
3) Mill the cylinder mating surface - known as flycutting I can smooth out the surface and match all three cylinders.  May require thicker copper head gaskets for proper compression ratio
4) Mill the intake area for a welded on intake tube - will mate to William Wynne's intake pipes.

Welding:
The main welding procedure that I can do is to TIG weld the aluminum intake manifold onto the intake log.  Not everybody wants this done as others use the stock intake pad.

Spark plugs holes:

If the spark plug holes are damaged - or by request, TIME SERTS are installed.  I also provide a set of copper spark plug gaskets to be used with these inserts.  It reduces the risk of leakage due to the small stock gasket.

Valve Job:

There are some options in the valve job.  What I recommend is replacing all the valves or at least the intakes with tufftrided valves.  If the springs and retainers are is good shape they can be reused.  However, there is something to be said for replacing everything.  Remember that I have over 550 hours on a a good valve job with just new valves.  Guides will be replaced as necessary or if requested they can all be new but I have found that good stock guides work well.  A three angle valve grind and lapping is always done.

Custom:

Everybody has different needs or wants so the work require for one person is not the same as for another.  Customized milling and welding, valve work and even painting can be done as per request.  Great care will be taken on all heads and I will call you and tell you where you stand as far as recommendations and progress.
