This was our
last
week in
Nampula so a lot of work was left to do.
With Rolland gone back to the States,
it's just Dad and me
left...
Since we didn't have all the new pieces for the right
cheek cowl Dad and I manufactured repairs to get it all
together. Dad did most of this repair while I
worked on gear doors and installing the rebuilt nose
gear...
Repairs are
primered and gear is in place. Starting work on
cowl flaps and rigging the doors.
The right wing is finally all repaired and
painted! The new wingtip is also painted and
inside of tank is sealed.
The left
wing is also finished and painted. No wingtip as
it was not delivered to Nampula on time. I guess
Dave will have to paint it himself. I know that he
will be able to do it.
The right aileron was also replaced with a good used
one. We only had to primer and paint
it.
Plane is back on its
gear with all the gear doors fitted, repairs finished,
and painting done. Once the engine arrives Dave
will be able to get the plane back together and in the
air.
By the day we were to leave back to South Africa for our
trip home we had accomplished all that we were supposed
to. It had been a long couple weeks of work but
well worth the results. I really enjoyed
working with Dave, Rolland and especially my Dad during
this project.
Another beautiful sunset with MAF's
206....
Dad and I left for South
Africa from Nampula on an ALM (Mozambique Airlines)
Boeing 737. We had to overnight in Maputo on
Saturday and finally arrive in Johannesburg early Sunday
morning. We were met at the airport by Willie
and his wife who took us north to another airport
to introduce us to a couple other KR guys. We
looked at KRs and ate breakfast at the airport
diner. These guys were great hosts and fun to
around. I cant wait to return to spend more time
with them and do a little flying in the area.
Enjoy some of the pics of these guys....
Here are the guys from left to right.
Ferdie Koekemoer (KR2 - turbo), Willie van der Walt
(KR2), Jaco Swanepoel
(KR2S)
Ferdie and his fiance Liane with his KR...A beautiful
girl....both of them!
Peit Smit showed up in his KR2 "No
Fear"...
"A
thank you to you guys for your hospitality and making a
couple KR guys feel at home halfway across the
world. It was a pleasure to meet you
all."
Willie dropped Dad and me back at
Johannesburg Int. Airport for our 630pm flight out for
Dulles. Again, it was another 16 hour
flight sitting in little seats (the KR is more
comfortable...)
The Airbus 340-600 on approach to Dulles. No I'm
not sitting on the tail...This is a pic of the display
in the seat in front of me. Neat
stuff.
After a couple more small flight I
finally arrived back home and Dad was back in
Missouri. It had ben a long time away but well
worth the trip and work. It will be good to
see the 210 back into the air and into ministry
soon. We pray that Dave will put the plane
to good use and have many, many hours of safe flying to
come. If you are interested in seeing more
about MAF and its ministry you can see more at
MAF.org. If you are interested in giving a gift to
MAF or the fund that sponsors trips like this you can
give to the "Master Mechanic Fund" at MAF. This
fund allows retired or volunteer mechanics to travel
around the world helping MAF in the maintenance and
support of the pilots and mechanics when needed. I
would like to thank MAF for giving my dad and I the
opportunity to help out in this way. It was
truly a blessing and a good
time.
